William and Mayme (Flamme) Spiess
William F. Spiess was born Wilhelmus in Tulcea, Romania on March 28, 1898. His service records show his date of birth as March 28, 1896. Apparently, when Fred completed his Intent to Naturalize Papers, he recorded the birthdate wrong, and this document shows William born in 1896, making it official in the eyes of the government.
Mayme Emma Hannah Flamme was born in Martin, North Dakota on July 29, 1905 to Edward Frank Flamme and Mari (Keller) Flamme. Grandpa Flamme immigrated to America sometime in 1892 and eventually settled in Hegbert Township, Swift County, Minnesota. Mary Keller’s father, Ludvig (Louis) Keller, immigrated to America in 1892, and settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where Mary was born in 1868. The Kelleres eventually moved to Swift County as well, and this is where Edward and Mary were married in 1889. About 1900, Grandpa Flamme sold his farm in Minnesota and moved to Martin, North Dakota. Edward and Mary are both buried here.
William enlisted in the Navy at Minneapolis on May 1, 1917. He served various terms until March 1922. The 1920 Martin, North Dakota shows him living alone. He was the enumerator of this census.
William and Mayme were married on December 23, 1925. It was sometime after this that they moved to the Twin Cities and started their family.
